Reactive dog training in Georgetown

You can't blame them, if you don't train them. Dogs become reactive for many reasons — being attacked or rushed by off-leash dogs, being teased by humans, or lack of structure and protection from their pack leaders. Our trainers identify the source of the reactivity and build a program to regain balance.

How we approach reactive dogs

The goal of our programs is to educate clients on their dog's basic needs to feel stimulated and safe — and then to teach the dog how to deal with the emotions causing the intense reactions. Fearful dogs need to build confidence; pushy dogs need to learn patience and impulse control.

Common reactivity we work with:

  • Leash reactivity to other dogs, people, bikes, joggers, or vehicles
  • Fence-line aggression in your yard or on walks
  • Door reactivity — barking, lunging when guests arrive
  • Stranger fear — fear-based barking or avoidance
  • Resource guarding — food, toys, sleeping spots
  • Dog-to-dog aggression in multi-dog homes

The adult dog reality

Dogs begin to mature into adults during the second year, and most reach natural maturity by 2 years old. After a year old, we're dealing with a dog that has adult confidence and is less eager to change. After 2 years, it's still possible to change bad habits — but it'll be more difficult.

Obedience is the foundation

Obedience training is the foundation of all dog training — it's what teaches the dog patience, impulse control, and focus. Without those three skills, any dog is going to have a hard time listening around distractions.

How we structure reactive training

Private lessons (recommended for moderate-to-severe cases)

1-on-1 customized training focused on your dog's specific weaknesses. Best for clients dealing with aggression or reactivity who need a tailored plan. Three on-site packages: Basic Starter (3 lessons, $395+hst), In Depth (5 lessons, $650+hst), or All Inclusive (10 lessons, $1,250+hst). In-home option also available at $180/hour + travel fee.

Reactive Dog Workshop — $60/class+hst

For clients who've had some private sessions with a trainer to work on their handling and their dog's response to triggers, and are looking for more practice in a safe environment. Concentrates on building a positive relationship through play, agility, and mental stimulation. We work on your handling skills and find your dog's triggers to work on the source of the reactivity.

The balanced trainer approach

As balanced trainers, our staff is able to provide multiple solutions for common problems. Our trainers know how to use many different tools on the market and can recommend the best tool for your dog's temperament. No two dogs are the same, and we don't force any training tools or concepts on our clients.

"Fabulous experience! My puppy and I have both learned so much. Compassionate, smart, and kind experts who are great at what they do. They never make you feel embarrassed, even with a reactive dog or big challenges […]"
